I dimly recall, back when I was a child (forties and early fifties) the
whole family gathering around the radio to listen to dramatic/
comedy programs (Amos & Andy, The Great Gildersleeve, usw.)
but not the two above. The Christmas of 1950, I received my own
RCA table-model radio, and I listened to various programs aimed
at us younger folks (like Sgt. Preston)...and as well the National
Barn Dance on WLS, hoping to hear Homer & Jethro!
>From about 1955 on, I listened to the "Top 20" on WPEO (Peoria);
after hearing a few of Jimmy Reed'd hits thereon, I realized I really
liked blues...and discovered I could hear blues all night on WLAC
(Nashville)! Sadly, I never bought any of the blues records they
advertised...!
Actually, I bought a Philco 37-9 console at a local auction for $5...
and spent many evenings/nights tuning for MW "DX"...IIRC, I had
heard 42 states when I drifted away from that...!
