Yes, Bob had worked for Obie just before Eli died in 1960 and was involved with the estate's negotiations with Pickwick. He wrote an article for (I think) Audio but most of the info on his early career came from...(wait for it)
Saga. Years ago he sent me a copy of his draft along with a photocopy of the Saga piece.
He also wrote a description of one of Oberstein's clandestine ban-busting sessions but the location was changed from NYC to the midwest to protect his sources.

I'm thinking that Robert Angus wrote a lengthy article on Obie years ago and that I have a copy (but I'm also thinking that I ran across it the other week while starting to pack and thought "That looks interesting" and that it's now well and truly buried).dl > From: david.diehl at hensteeth.com> To: 78-l at klickitat.78online.com> Date: Sat, 10 Apr 2010 17:53:39 +0000> Subject: Re: [78-L] of Oberstein and Kapp> > There is a very fictionalized (bordering on delusional) bio titled "The Man with the Golden Ear" in the always-reliable Saga Magazine of Jan 1960.> Here's a quote for you: "The only way a man like Oberstein could possibly survive with such hlgh-handed methods was to be right 100 per cent of the time. That, of course, is practically impossible, but accomplishing the impossible is one of his talents. In the issues which arose between him and artists, diligent research fails to turn up even one instance where results proved Eli wrong and the artist right."> DJD> > Visit the Blue Pages: the Encyclopedic Guide to 78 RPM Party Records> http://www.hensteeth.com> -----Original Message-----> From: Malcolm Rockwell [mailto:malcolm at 78data.com]> Sent: Saturday, April 10, 2010 12:51 PM> To: '78-L Mail List'> Subject: [78-L] of Oberstein and Kapp> > In seeking published references to Eli Oberstein and his relationship with Gennett I went looking for a bio of Oberstein. All I found online were bits and pieces, nothing definitive. Is there an article or a book length bio that expands on his career?Same for Jack Kapp, who really ought to have a bio out there. Anything?Mal_______________________________________________78-L mailing list78-L at klickitat.78online.comhttp://klickitat.78online.com/mailman/listinfo/78-l> _______________________________________________> 78-L mailing list> 78-L at klickitat.78online.com> http://klickitat.78online.com/mailman/listinfo/78-l _______________________________________________78-L mailing list78-L at klickitat.78online.comhttp://klickitat.78online.com/mailman/listinfo/78-l
