“Gypsy” was recorded at the  fourth Dial Session, as below. This 
information comes from my recently published book, Dial Records: West 
Coast Jazz and the Be-Bop Era.

Session 4 Group: Charlie Parker Quintet. Orchestra leader: Howard 
McGhee. Personnel: Howard McGhee, trumpet; Charlie Parker, alto 
saxophone; Jimmy Bunn, piano; Bob Kesterson [correct spelling 
“Kestnerson” per note on page 5 of Bob Weir’s Teddy Edwards 
Discography, published by Names & Numbers 2005], bass; Roy Porter, 
drums. Union contract filed: Monday, July 29, 1946. Recording date: 
Monday, July 29, 1946, from 7:30 to 10:30 P.M. Location: C.P. MacGregor 
Studios, 729 So. Western, Hollywood, California. Russell gives his 
address as 5946 Hollywood Blvd. By the February 19, 1947 date, this had 
become 5934 Hollywood Blvd. Cost for the session was $180.00, with 
McGhee the leader receiving $60.00; the rest received $30.00 each, 
including Parker. Miscellaneous costs included: liquor, $10.00; food, 
$5.00; medicine, $5.00; dubbing “Gypsy,” $5.00; remastering mx. 1026-, 
$20.00. Sound engineer: Ben Jordan.  Supervision: Ross Russell. Issues: 
Six numbers, 9 takes—6 issues 3 undocumented. Eight 16-inch acetates 
cut—4 masters, 4 protection only.

Parker’s sessions with Miles Davis were recorded at WOR Studios in New 
York City.
