The worst I ever experienced was poor sounding music. Now that I am aware of the possibilities of certain damage factors, I need to understand how to detect them before any damage is done. I'm preparing to make some equipment changes as well as to start listening to my most treasured acoustics that I have not played in many years. Until now I've only been playing electric 78s.

Probably the greatest enemy to records is worn stili, regardless of
equipment. Even lighter tracking equipment will damage if they are
running chisels instead of unworn needles.
And regardless of equipment, records were never intended to last
forever. Play your beloved records sparingly. If you value them, record
them and just listen to the recordings.
Even acoustic equipment in good nick will not make acoustic records last
longer. Acoustic records will survive longer if played at lighter
tracking forces with more compliant equipment, with properly fitted needles.
Store them upright with as little side force as possible, in a dry, dust
free and heat free environment.
