[78-L] turntable question

In order to start an Aeolean, you have to physically move it outward, beyond
the edge of the turntable, and to set the brake, you move it in towards the
center to the last groove of the record and push the brake-set button at the
edge of the turntable. Was it an acoustic era machine or an electrical one?

Subject: [78-L] turntable question

A friend writes of of a turntable on which there was a tone arm that would
move to the centre of the record and then "slowly move to the edge before
playing". He says that it wasn't a changer. What would this have been?
