In fact, one needed a strong voice, as well as the skill to make it carry, 
to
sing on acoustic phonograph records; this is probably why a handful of
vocalists performed "vocal choruses" on the relatively few records
which included them. Remember that, as well, singers DIDN'T have
microphones/amplifiers for live performance...they had to sing loudly
enough to be heard all through the hall!
