This has already been answered, but just in case you missed it: the 
Packburn was a device invented by Richard Burns and Tom Packard that 
would take the signal from a 78 played in stereo and dynamically 
switch from one channel to the other when the former had impulse 
noise (pops and ticks). This would work because the noise was often 
in only one channel.
