Columbia started using the "W" prefix on their electric recordings in 1925
(I would guess this indicated the use of the Western Electric system...
one also wonders why Col(US) didn't use Col(UK)'s proprietary system,
since they were owned by the British operation...?!). Presumably, any 
extant patents granted to WE in the 1921-24 period would have expired 
between 1938 and 1941...?!
