Eugene, I have to forgive your lack of knowlelge about what went on in 
Europe in the forties.
The German Army marched into Paris in June 1940 and very quickly, reprisals, 
executions, roundups began.
As she had received so much acclaim, popularity and success in France, 
Josephine Baker felt she owed something and instead of returning to the USA
she joined the resistance in France. (The underground)
That's not taking "an active roll in politics" in your lexicon.
It was risking her life for Liberty as did so many Europeans during the 
widespread occupation by thugs and murderers.
I am sorry however, that she  ruined her value as an entertainer for you.
