If it weren’t for Mr. Hayhoe’s link to the Clark Terry Discography, I
might not have found it. The discography is certainly comprehensive but
not complete. It fails to list the 78 recordings Barnet made for Apollo
Records and cross-reference them to their reissue on Norman Granz LP
labels. On page one of the disco, the title “Phalanges” is misspelled
“Phlanges.” “Phalanges” was also recorded in July 1953 by Louis
Bellson: The Exciting Mr. Bellson and His Big Band (10-inch Norgran MGN
14). I remember this LP very well because of “Caxton Hall Swing” and a
performance of “Skin Deep,” Bellson’s signature tune at the time. The
Barnet Town Hall Jazz Concert’s principal issue is on 12-inch Columbia
Lp CL 639, not an EP. The recordings on the Charlie Barnet Dance
Session on Clef were made in 1947 for Apollo, as were the tunes listed
for the Europa LP above. Granz used the “Dance Session” title for two
12-inch LPs by Basie. The illustration of the two dancers on the cover
were not created for the album but were first published in a Disc
catalog in 1947 that contains a lot of interesting art by David Stone
Martin.
