[78-L] Total Recall

I've always wondered about that story...Decca threatening to sue Victor if
they didn't pull the Goodman/Fitzgerald sides. And Goodman did remake
Goodnight My Love with Frances Hunt singing.

But the records don't seem to be very rare...were they in fact recalled at
any time?

I'd be interested in knowing more about the Boots and his Buddies
recordings.I have a circa
1938 Bluebird of his playing "The Somebody".The title was a retitling of
"Somebody Loves
Me".I found that one plus a hundred or more at a one time business in Coos
Bay,Oregon
called Sunset Automatic Music Company. They originally sold and serviced Juke
Boxes
and pinball machines. The owner of the company found at least a few thousand
quite by ac-
cident in 1994.Two circa 1936 Victors I found were of the Benny Goodman
Orchestra with
Ella Fitzgerald(who was not listed-the records just said "with vocal
refrain")of "Take Another
Guess","Goodnight my Love","'Taint No Use(vocal by Benny Goodman)" and the
last title
escapes me.I was of the impression that when Decca heard of the records
Fitzgerald cut
with Goodman,Decca threatened to sue and Victor recalled all of the
recordings.

One of the best reasons I hunt for 78s is to be surprised at what is found.

I'm still on my Texas label 78 kick and I found these three in the last
couple of weeks.

Euday Bowman on Bowman 1/2 playing his composition, "Twelfh Street Rag."
(Bowman/Fort Worth)

Hank Thompson singing ads for Shell Oil to promote pesticides to combat boll
weevils. (Shell/Houston)

Sol Hoopi and Ira Stanphill doing some gospel numbers on Hymntime.
(Hymntime/Fort Worth)

Earlier surprises have been Boots and His Buddies on Talent (Dallas), Crown
Prince Waterford on Torch (Dallas),
Little Doug (Sahm) on Sarg (Luling), Phineas Newborn, Jr. on Peacock Jazz
(Houston), and Rufus Thomas on Star Talent (Dallas).

Always looking for Texas label 78s if anyone has any they don't want.
