I use Windex on non-shellac records. Safety first -try an area in the run
out initially. If the surface gets cloudy or soft, then try another cleaner.
True safety first, transfer the dirty record after giving it a wipe to
remove truly loose dust etc. Then try cleaning.

Reading this recalls a painful memory.  Years ago I had an acetate disc
dating from around 1936.  It was a recording 'off air' (from Holland) of the
Lew Stone Band with a vocal by Al Bowlly and Trumpet Solo by Alfie
Noakes. (Alf owned the disc).

The disc had been stored badly and the surface was encrusted with dust and
dirt.  I used lukewarm water and a little mild soap - almost immediately the
acetate parted company with the alloy base - and all was lost,

Thanks for your suggestions on playing these records. I tried a few parts,
but there was a lot of muck on the needletip within a few seconds, so i was
a bit afraid af damaging these records. Indeed, the records are dirty and
are covered with an oily substance. I understand it is no problem to remove
this oil ? Just use some luke warm water with a bit of soap, I presume ?

best regards,

Marc
