Back around 1959-60, there were Aiwa (IIRC) battery-powered tape recorders
that cost about $20 or so. NOT capstan-driven, they were useless as actual
tape recorders (you could only properly hear recordings made on the same
machine, with the batteries run down the same amount...?!) but us
high-school
kids had a lot of fun with them...!
