[78-L] towns with funny names

I was at the Rose Parade on New Year's Day (my son was marching with the Eagle Scouts in front of the Boy Scout float) and noticed a marching band from the curious sounding town of Soddy-Daisy, Tennessee. I looked it up when I got home and found that it was the result of the merging of the towns of Soddy and Daisy. Soddy came from a Cherokee name for a river, the Saudy, that ran through town. Guess there's a reason for everything.

On old Route 66 (now I-15) going from Barstow to Las Vegas, there is an exit for Zzyzyx Road, probably the last entry in any geographical listing of street names. Turns out that was the actual intention, to get the last entry in! It's pronounced "Zy-zicks." My kids always look forward to seeing the sign for the road, even though it's out in the middle of the desert. There's a stop sign and not much else.
