Bop or not, Frank Morgan, Parker, Pepper, Shank all came to professional age and the studio when 78s were the norm. As for earlier altos, what about Buster Bennett and Hilton Jefferson? Don Stovall sonded good with Pete Johnson too.

But on Royal's note, I don't consider 1999 and 2001 "long ago".
Certainly not anywhere close to the 78 era which is our subject, not
"modern players", unless their career stretches back into the 78 era.
