[78-L] Sonny Boy Williams

I am not aware of Mr Williams being listed in any blues books or discographies I have or have seen...I agree with you that people may think of him as a blues singer rather than a jump band singer who recorded in a prototype R&B/jazzy setting but also blues afficianados of times past may have thought that the jazz/R&B writers should deal with him and already would have done - hence the lack of info??!!

Incidentally, I admire the work of Sonny Boy Williams along with John Lee "Sonny Boy" Williamson, Aleck Rice Miller (Sonny Boy II) and the Sonny Boy Williamson (the 3rd??!) on Rama records (late 50s/early 60s) who I believe was from Louisiana and assumed the Sonny Boy identity although it was still being used by Miller.

Maybe others can help on the line up of the Decca band...

The Bluebird/RCA Victor 78s by John Lee Williamson and the Trumpet 78s by Aleck Rice Miller are among my favourite records of any style of music.

Regards
Matthew.

Singer Sonny Boy Williams recorded four titles for Decca on 27 July 1942
as follows (from Settelmier's Decca listing--he also misspells it as
"Williamson").

8643    SONNY BOY WILLIAMS    SAVOY IS JUMPIN'    71221
8651    SONNY BOY WILLIAMSON    REVERSE THE CHARGES    71222
8651    SONNY BOY WILLIAMS    RUBBER BOUNCE    71223
8643    SONNY BOY WILLIAMSON    HONEY, IT MUST BE LOVE    71224

It's an open secret that the trumpet player is Freddie/Freddy Webster,
who wrote attractive "Reverse The Charges" (on which he solos). Williams
is not listed in any jazz discography that I've seen. Perhaps it was
because Williams's name gives the impression that he was a blues singer,
rather than a jump band singer.

Ruppli's Decca books give no personnel, not even Webster. Anyone know
who they might be? Is Williams listed in any blues discography?

Williams has no connection with Sonny Boy Williamson or Sonny Boy
Williamson No.2.
