My understanding is that the session was made in the theatre and that it 
was recorded for private purposes only - Gerswhin was still making 
changes to the score and he made these recordings for studying.  I don't 
think these were ever duplicated until sometime in the 70s when they 
were issued on LP.

But I could be wrong and often am.
