Last week I got a copy of Folkways FJ 2806, Volume VI of Jazz, subtitled
on the labels and booklet -- but not the cover -- "Chicago No. 2
(Alternate)". They explain:
"There are two versions of Jazz, Volume 6, Chicago No.2. Both are
indexed; entries to the alternate volume are clearly denoted in the
index by the initials __alt.__, which follow titles, artists, and
instrumentals in the three indices. There was no choice, in the case of
this volume, but to issue an alternate set. As explained in the
__Notes__ to Jazz, Volume 11, Addenda, licensing arrangements with
companies controlling original jazz material are subject to revision
without notice, and when such revisions are required, material in the
Folkways Jazz Series will be occasionally required to be altered or
withdrawn.
"In the case of Chicago No 2 some titles conflicted with Riverside
issues put on the market subsequent to release of this volume. In order
to avoid duplication, conflicting titles have been withdrawn until such
time as the Riverside reissues are no longer current, and the original
plan of reissues for Volume 6 can be restored. In the meantime, the
editors have done their best to select the very best alternates that can
be chosen to represent Chicago jazz as it developed in the twenties and
thirties."
Can someone give me the original line-up so we can see what the changes
were? AND, does anyone know if Folkways restored the original line-up
after the Riverside reissue was "no longer current" or when they went
out of business -- whichever came first? How many volumes had to be
revised?
I was surprised to see this because of the tales that have been told of
Moe Asch not caring too much about clearing rights to reissues. Did he
do this if RCA or Columbia objected, or only if another marginal company
like Riverside did? And what version comes from the Smithsonian when
you order this disc? What if what you want is something on this revised
version and they want to supply the original?? Or do they give you a
choice?
