Bear Family has done it again - "Way Out There" - a 6-CD box set documenting the first decade in the recording careers of the Sons of the Pioneers and Roy Rogers (1934-43)- has just been issued. A lavish, full-color hardback book with an essay by Douglas B. Green is included. The set is advertised as "The Complete Commercial Recordings" of these fine acts, but this is a misnomer - alternate takes are included on many songs, but issued takes are not. Still, it's a terrific sounding and looking set. I provided a few test pressings for the box. The set includes recordings made for Decca and ARC.
Interesting technical point - each CD clocks in at over 83 minutes of material, with one disc coming in at a remarkable 87:04, easily the longest I've seen.
