More than a hundred out of what, 5000? 10,000? That's almost nothing.
Playing music for the public was a BIG industry, whether in hotels,
restaurants, dance halls, movie theaters, excursion boats, weddings,
parties, etc etc. The very few recordings of otherwise "unknown" bands
can't even hint at the thousands who provided this music.

I also have reservations about his statement concerning local bands. A
glance through
Rust's ADBD reveals that dozens, maybe more than a hundred non-national
bands did
record, even if not for major labels and not profusely.
