[78-L] A moldy issue^

A 20 yr.+ evaluation of a wide variety of shellac, vinyl, Edison &
lacquer discs have demonstrated that thoroughly cleaned surfaces are
highly resistant to re-infestation by mold & mildew under reasonable
storage conditions. The test was conducted in St. Louis, MO in a home
built in the late 1880's in it's original environment; forced air
furnace, no ac, original wall paper in poor condition, etc. High mold
& mildew levels throughout the building. Cleaned items were stored in
closed metal cabinets & on shelves throughout throughout the house.
Contaminated sleeves were either replaced with fresh paper sleeves or
blown out with filtered air & reused out {in no way an effective
method of generating an uncontaminated sleeve}. Visual light
microscopy & playback were used to assess record surface quality.

That said, the most effective long term treatment for mold &/or mildew
infected discs is to thoroughly clean them, removing the growth & the
materials on the surface that serve as the primary feed stock for
biological growth.

While thoroughly cleaned & properly cared for vinyl pressings &
Diamond Discs are very resistant to biological re-growth, it must be
remembered that shellac & lacquer discs are inherently food for the
bugs of your choice. Nonetheless, with thorough cleaning & proper
care, shellac & lacquer have shown considerable resistance to re-
infestation.

Appearances are deceiving. Incomplete cleaning leaves residues which
over time can lead to permanent damage.

Duane Goldman
