[78-L] Bix test pressing, unissued

I'm not convinced that this is Bix's voice. Though there is a lot of
improvisation, there is also written musical arrangement. Though Bix's ears
were better than most, it took an arranger such as Bill Challis to put his
own stuff down on paper. Bix could not have written the arrangement for this
record, and I suspect that someone other than Bix on that session did. My
guess is the pianist Tom Satterfield who was also an arranger for Paul
Whiteman. I think it's HIS voice that is heard on the recording. Note that
immediately after his voice, he plays a 2 bar tricky phrase on the piano
that he uses to get into his long solo. Maybe he'd fluffed it on the
previous run-through and asked the band to play the last 4 bars that lead up
to his solo.

Regards

Wow. In a funny way, a screwed-up recording like this brings the players to
life in a way that the good version can't.

Am I correct in assuming that the only way to adjust the bass sax blasting
was to move him back, or have him point towards the other wall, on the next
take? Or maybe he "put a sock in it"?

As leader, that's got to be Bix's voice, right? Great accent.
