When Granz was touring the South with his Jazz At The Philharmonic 
troupe, he inevitably faced segregationist policies there. I've heard it 
said that he was able to buy off certain venue proprietors' prejudices 
with his cheque book.

Anyone know if this was true?

I would have thought this would have been impossible where segregation 
was enshrined in law, but possible where it was just done "on the nod".
