Just got a copy of "Hommage a Nesuhi," Rhino Handmade's box set tribute to Nesuhi Ertegun, the late jazz producer for Atlantic Records. One of the tracks I had never heard before: "In a Little Spanish Town," which features an a cappella version of the song, sung by The City Service Quartet in 1927, which was then overdubbed in 1976 with an alto sax obbligato by Yusef Lateef. The effect really turned out nicely and it made me wonder if other after-the-fact overdubs have been done in this fashion. I'm not talking about the mock duets, like Natalie and Nat Cole's "Unforgettable" (which I didn't care for), but adding something that really complemented an original recording in a tasteful way.
