I think both Steven and I have made our points on this poor topic with some help from Dr. Biel and others.  In Steven's defence, his perception is not completely inaccuate.  The 401 is an east-west highway but there are some long stretches around Mississauga where the highway is running due north and south but anyone on it would still say they're going east or west.  Up near Parry Sound, when you are headed north on 400, there are actually points where you are going south, at least I have been going "north" in the evening and the sun has been setting to my right.  As readers who do not live in this area will guess, the 400 and the 401 are the principal highways in southern Ontario.
