Dick Cathcart did the trumpet work in the  Pete Kelly movie...he is one of 
my favorites (you can catch him on a loot of the Welk videos on YouTube). 
Don't recall who did the music for the TV show.

Recently bought online a 60-minute 1955 episode of the COLGATE VARIETY HOUR,
the whole show devoted to plugging the movie, hosted by Jack Webb, with all
the musical performers from the film doing full-length versions of songs
that are only heard in part in the film itself.  Quite worthwhile.  Webb
also spends a few minutes plugging the various record tie-ins, proudly
pointing out that every major label - Capitol, Decca, Columbia & RCA had a
release out.
