  It works the other way too if you are in Europe and want to play a
U.S. region 1 disc.  The real trick is to look the machine up before you
buy it to see if you can make it region-free.  Since you can't hack all
machines, buy one that you can.  Some discs from Europe are already
region-free.

This may be of interest..it may also not be off topic if it enables you
to play 
English and European DVDs containing material by vintage entertainers. I
was 
able to make the appropriate adjustment in my Philips DVP 3140 in ten
seconds.
