The ultimate one was Jimmy Dorsey's recording of "Tangerine" with Bob Eberly and Helen O'Connell.

Some fine Helen Forrest vocals on those Capitol versions, including her
cover" of Kitty Kallen's "I'm Beginning..."
I love Forrest, but in this case I think Kitty wins the round...what great
wing she brings to her version! Too bad she ended up doing rubbish like
Little Things Mean a Lot" in the 50s...I don't hate many records but that
ne turns my tummy. One part of the lyric I really despise: "Say I look
ice when I'm not." Damn it, that doesn't even make any sense...it should
e "when I don't" but I guess that doesn't sound as "nicey-nice" as does the
ther. Gag.
Poor Kitty...I'm sure she made plenty of money with that 50s stuff but I
ike to think of her in the 40s with James and J Dorsey. The Dorsey version
f Besame Mucho with Bob Eberle and Kitty is great. Helen O'Connell was
ood doing those duets with Bob and she was the most beautiful swing band
ocalist by far (so sez I) but she wasn't as good a singer as Kitty Kallen.
Who else besides me likes those swing band duet things where the guy sings
he first chorus slow and then the "girl singer" comes in with the hipper
azzy chorus of the tune? Krupa did it after the war20with my man Buddy
tewart and Ms. O'Day...I really do love those sides esp. Did You Ever Get
hat Feeling in the Moonlight and Aren't You Kind of Glad We Did.
Buddy died so young and Anita lived a long time...two of my very faves.

On seeing this thread, I pulled out James's Capitol recordings from the
mid-1950s, which are amazingly good. Beautiful sound, a lot of the same
musicians as in the earlier Columbia sides (Allen Reuss, Willie Smith,
Buddy Rich) and great arrangements.

Indeed, when the College Conservatory of Music in Cincinnati ejected their
78
pm collection in 1988 th
ere was another large instance of EFHJREM. And it's a
ity they are so prevalent, as they are really very good records, but they
urvive in such high numbers that makes them undesirable. I also tend
towards
is later LP albums from "The New James" on -- no one suspected he would
become
uch an outstanding bop player; moreover he retained the same measure of
xpressiveness and bravura that makes his early work so exceptional. I can
do
ithout the string section he had in the early 40s; indeed, so could have
James
s he once noted, but it was there for commercial purposes.
