Confetta, a good friend of mine (and my website) has made available a
series of recordings from the late 60s of Smith Ballew reminiscing about
his early music career. It appears to have been put together as a radio
broadcast, with some of the most inept "engineering" I've ever heard!
(grin). She's done her best to make sense of the recordings - they seem
to be out of sequence, or perhaps there are parts missing. It seems to
have been recorded in two chunks: one in Temple, TX (with a turntable
running a bit slow) and one elsewhere (Fort Worth?) in Texas, with much
better equipment. Ballew makes some interesting comments on Ed Kirkeby,
Ben Selvin, Sam Lanin and Glen Miller and his (Ballew's) early days as a
banjo player with Jimmy's Joys. Seger Ellis makes an appearance as well.

The files are here:

They can be downloaded from megaupload.com, or streamed from imeem.com,
but imeem requires registration.

Confetta is a tireless promoter of vintage music - she has opened the
eyes (and ears) of many young people to this kind of music..
