Steven,

You're right about the electricity factor, but Canada kept on making 
78s until 1962, at least, I could give you some Pathé references as 
evidence.

Kristjan,

France did not follow the Western Europe agenda regarding 78s. The main 
plant (EMI, two thirds of the French market) stopped making them in 
1956. Other (smaller) labels were a little slower. On the other hand, 
British EMI's reluctance to make microgrooves forced their American 
partners, RCA Victor and Columbia to look elsewhere, not only for 
Britain, but for France, as well, which was unfair.
