George Olsen's Victor recording of "Doin' The Raccoon" has a short reference
to a steel coat to be worn in Chicago, complete with the sound of a tommy
gun.

It's a lot later (1950, filmed in '55), but "Guys and Dolls" covers the time
period. So does "Robin and the Seven Hoods", which has many great numbers
you might be able to use; "Bang Bang" with Sammy Davis Jr. shooting machine
guns while tap dancing on the bar is a crowd-pleaser.
From the time period:
Al Jolson
"Puttin' on the Ritz"
"Minnie the Moocher"
For the Depression, I think kids would respond to "Single Girl, Married
Girl" by the Carter Family. I know I do! 1927, but the Depression came early
to Appalachia. Also, any number of Jimmie Rodgers numbers -- "In the
Jailhouse Now".
I'm sure the others will have much better selections than mine.
