I think he was referring to the fact that, after the advent of electrical
recording, most singers abandoned the "stand up and be counted" style that
was necessary when singing into a horn.  Even Billy Murray toned down his
voice a bit and crooned on some early electrics. But some singers kept on
belting them out, and consequently stood quite a distance from the
microphone.

I don't follow this thread..what makes the ones "generic" and the others
not?   Is someone saying that the crooners were distinct from each other in
a way that Arthur Fields couldn't be distinguished from Murray or Kaufman or
Harry Richman?  Doesn't make sense to me...all the singers mentioned of both
eras sound quite distinctive to me.

Okay, here's an idle question about popular singing:  We know that by the
early '30s, the "intimate" Crosby/Columbo/Vallée style had all but
supplanted the
"generic" style of Billy Murray/Irving Kaufman/Arthur Fields.  What and When
were the last or latest song(s) on record, featuring an unapologetically
"generic" vocal?
 
I guess that by 1933 they were totally extinct.   What say y'all?
