Wilder was an amazingly versatile composer. Great songs, stunning symphonic
music, excellent concert band pieces and a slew of chamber music which is
still being discovered in private hands.
When I was first married, Marni and I went to an Alec Wilder Society concert
where the suite for four French Horns was performed. According to the
program, this was maybe the third or fourth performance of the piece. She
loved it. "Are there other pieces like this? Do you write for that
instrument?" She became a Wilder fan quickly. That says a lot, as she has no
patience for most concert music.
