You have a point there, Bob. The Taliban regime in Afghanistan actually
banned all music, except unaccompanied Taliban songs. Instruments were
destroyed, music archives also.
But what other musical bans do we know of?
Just the other day I heard that cool jazz, together with rock music, was
forbidden in Hungary a few years in the 1950's, being regarded as decadent.
Bop and swing, apparently, was OK.
And in today's paper I read that the use of drums was forbidden in Swedish
music in the 17th century, except for military music. Ethnic music had to do
without. Which, according to the author of the article, actually had the
good effect that Swedish folk music lacks marked rhythmical patterns, but
has developed other, more elaborate ways to make it swing.
Jojk (the traditional Sami song) has been forbidden in Sweden and Norway,
due to its heretic, that is, non-Christian, roots. Etc.
Weren't The Beatles banned by radio stations in the US Bible Belt in 1966?
They were in South African radio 1966-1971, for sure.
More bans, anyone?
Kristjan
