Tommy Ladnier and Sidney Bechet recorded a really hot version of 
"When You and I Were Young, Maggie" in 1938. More recently, Evan 
Christopher recorded a jazz version of "Listen to the Mocking Bird" 
(I have this on CD somewhere). So, it's possible to do good-sounding 
modern versions of creaky old songs, although I suppose Edison would 
have hated these performances.
