Yes, does not apply to sound recordings.  Sorry, I should have pointed that out when I posted it.  So much for being in a hurry and interruptions.
 
Our university archivist seems to have some clue about this but the rest of the library is much as Mike said.
 
It would be nice to have such a quickie calculator for sound recordings, but as Steve mentioned in his reply, it is so complicated that the simple answer is to follow Mike's cut-to-the-quick assumption that every sound recording is held in copyright by somebody somewhere until 2067 - or perpetuity, whichever comes first. 
 
So, IF anybody comes up with a quickie guide through this mire, let us know!

That is quite true.  It reflects the fact that most librarians don't 
know squat about sound recordings, something that ARSC and IASA noted 
decades ago.  It goes to their training and the lack of knowledge and 
interest of their educators.  They don't know any better, and often get 
shocked when assigned to work with their library's audio-video 
collection.  It is fascinating listening to the newbie questions at 
ARSC, because libraries would rather drag book people kicking and 
screaming into their AV areas rather than hire knowledgeable collectors 
or properly trained archivists.  Probably fits the description of 
Rodger's school's librarian, right?
