Having recently purchased Dan Morgenstern's superb and latest book "Living
With Jazz" (Pantheon Books), and having progressed to page 545, I was 
delighted to see the title of a new
section titled    "Discography: The Thankless Science" ..... a reprint of 
Dan's  original 1966 article on this topic.
It is a comprehensive ten page analysis of the history, methodology and 
present state of this pursuit and should perhaps be of interest to our list 
members.
The book, which covers the history of recorded jazz in an extended  and 
detailed section aptly titled "Recorded Jazz "as well as a large number of 
Morgenstern's takes on numerous artists (on record0 should be available in 
local libraries or chain bookstores. I highly recommend it.
