I hadn't even thought to look him up in Rust, and was pleased to find him
in that late 30s Noble band on Columbia, along with Earle Hagen, Frank
Leithner on piano, and Jack Dumont on tenor, who was in the Welk band at
the same time Don was.

If anyone thinks that the Welk boys were not capable of fine, swinging,
almost "cool" jazz, I'd urge them to go to YouTube and search for "Welk
Dark Eyes" to hear a very sophisticated take on that old tune, with a reed
trio of Bonnee, Dumont (on alto) and the excellent Russ Klein on tenor.
Damn good stuff, gang.
