[78-L] Using alcohol vapour to clean discs

The spirit-vapor method worked with watches because much of the
contamination was suspended in or on the oil. So when the oil
dissolved and dripped into the dish, the particles came with it.
Try this with your shellac discs, and you'll find shellac and
particles in that dish - hmmm... where did those grooves go?
So clean you won't even hear the music.
Contamination on shellac discs ends up stuck to the groove
walls and disc surface, and some mild mechanical action (ie.
scrubbing with appropriate soft material) is needed to loosen
up the contaminants. Chemical reaction alone won't do it.

Subject: [78-L] Using alcohol vapour to clean discs
My grandfather used to clean pocketwatches by suspending them with
the gears exposed downward, over a dish of spirits/alcohol. He would set
this arrangement up in a cupboard and forbid anyone to open the door for
several days. Sure enough there would a collection of fine particles in
the dish after the waiting was over, and the watch was as clean as
possible without any dismantling.
Would this process work for cleaning discs?
