The selling-discs-without-covers story was also attributed to Allan Sherman's "My Son the Folk Singer." I actually recall that happening at our local White Front department store - I was 6 and my father bought me the 45 single of "Tie Me Kangaroo Down, Sport" instead. One of my first purchases.

That album was such a fast seller that some stores (maybe only in Canada) were
forced to sell the discs without the covers until new ones could be printed up.
The Life photo is from December 1962. The follow-up album wasn't out longer
than a few weeks when JFK was killed. Lenny Bruce had to fulfill an engagement
that weekend and went out on stage, gauged the mood of the audience, and
finally said "Vaughn Meader is f**ked!"

Another album that died: Rich Little's "Scrooge And The Stars" on Canadian
Capitol. He did a JFK voice at one point, and the album had to be redone (a
Lloyd Bridges impression was spliced in) but it was too late for that year's
Christmas. The original album was mailed out to reviewers with a letter dated
.. November 22, 1963.
