Does anyone know how many pressings could generally be made from the
same stamper in the mid-1930s? I'm wondering if mother/stamper info
can be a useful source for determining how many copies were pressed
of a particular record. For example, I have beside me three copies of
Perfect 35-10-03 ("When I Grow Up" and "It's All So New To Me" by
Johnny Hamp's Orchestra). Two of the copies are identical and show
the 3-digit take/mother/stamper in the 12 o'clock position as 1-A-2
and 1-A-4 (for the A and B sides). The third copy shows 1-A-3 for
both sides. Of course, three copies is a very small sample, but if
other copies could be found all showing an "A" mother and stamper
numbers that are 4 or less, can we estimate from that the number that
were pressed? I've been actively collecting all of Johnny Hamp's
records for some time now and this particular ARC record seems to be
quite a bit rarer than the two other ARC Hamp discs. (For comparison,
I've found copies of Hamp's "Thanks A Million" on ARC pressings with
stamper numbers as high as 9.)
Thanks,
Bryan
