The Swastika meant a lot of things and from older Germany it was symbol of good luck and good fortune.   

In America many of those coin like objects stores used to give out in the 1910s to 1930s had a swastika on one side and the old lucky horse shoe (lucky it didn't hit you I guess) on the other.  And the words good luck or good health or whatever.  Needless to say these disappeared rather quickly at the end of the 30s.  

It's well known Hitler was interested in symbolism of ancient things, even the occult; and, films exist of swastika symbols being worn on robes before the NAZIs came along in Germany.
