Harry,

The main problem with using Insert>Symbol, and then searching in the chart is, you usually cannot see where the desired symbol will be entered.  You have to preset the location, go through all that jazz, preset the next location, ad infinitum, ad nauseam!  I find it much easier to prepare a file page of diacritical marks and how to access them with Alt + nnnn, and then print it out, so it is always available.  As to the Special Symbols, that's another story!

Incidentally, you can save a couple of steps by right clicking on the upper toolbar in Word, click on Customize, and then find the Symbol icon, and put it up into your toolbar somewhere.  Saves at least two steps.
