This was discussed on the 78-list more than ten years ago, and the
general conclusion, of course, was: almost impossible to tell.
An Indian member mentioned that about half a million titles (not
separate record releases) was produced in India over the years. He
posted this link to prove the matter:
http://mustrad.org.uk/articles/indcent.htm
And I guess it would be possible to estimate a total number of titles or
records, for any other country with a well documented national
discography. Unfortunately those countries are few and don't include
many Asian, African or South America countries, although many recordings
in these parts of the world were issued on international labels, and
should be possible to estimate.
Steve C Barr, at the time of this discussion, estimated the number of
78's issued in North America to have been about 3 million. That would
make about 45 000 records per year (1895-1960) which sounds a bit high.
It'd be interesting to hear what North American list members today think
of his estimation.
And what about you other guys, in Germany, the UK, Spain, etc - would it
be possible to estimate a number for your countries?
