I'm not an expert by far... but I also used ethanol for cleaning the brown residue from the heads and rollers with good results. For rubber it must not be very kind, though, but a fast cleaning with an ear cotton toothpick dipped in ethanol, which evaporates very fast, cannot do too much harm... Maybe modern times have brought some kind of silicone based cleaner or something specially developed for rubber rollers. You may ask at a video tape specialist shop, or something alike.
