Well, it was "strict tempo dancing" 80 years ago and even without that 
limit to creative use of rhythm, most dance bands in the 1950's and 
onward have been using living drum machines on stage before the advent 
of electronic drum machines. It all depends on what kind of music you're 
talking about.
In rock, RnB, soul etc you won't get far without a drummer on stage. In 
electronic dance music you often combine live drummers with live 
electronics, that is: use of interactive drum machines, which are 
instrument in themselves. The best place to find a musician accompanied 
by an on/off drum machine is probably in a piano bar where some grandpa 
is playing "Tea For Two" and "Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head" and 
thinks he is hip.
