The Washington Post just flashed a short story on his passing, saying more to come.
If there is any 78 connection at all, it may be that Jennifer Warnes' recording of his BIRD ON A WIRE may have been pressed on a Japanese promo Utopia 78.  May, may may.  I found a scan of it and it certainly looks like a 78.
