[78-L] Marni Nixon

I've also tried 45s on acoustic gramophones. Kinda maddish pleasure while
seeing the vinyl thread coming out of the steel needle. I also recorded
shouts on the run-out grooves of old vinyl records, shouting into a
homemade cardboard horn coupled to a gramophone soundbox!
Still keep these 45s, and the phrases at the run-out sound faint, but
audible anyway... The last ones are comically repeated until you raise the
pickup!

Saludos,

Iñigo

50s, heck. I was born in '63. My first record player was acoustic, used
steel needles, and only played 78's and 45's. 33's were for grown-ups
because grown-ups were a lot slower.

Come to think of it, I remember having yellow and orange 78s, why were
children's records 78s into the 50s?

I'm older, vintage of '52, but I remember loving 78s as a child because
they moved faster and I didn't have to wait as long to see the changer
change the record. Heck, I could even see the arm move in towards the
center of the record!

Only if you want to destroy them!

The first 45 I ever had, (Tell Me Why/Garden in the Rain, Four Aces). got
played on my old acoustic gramophone many times while I held my finger
against the turntable to slow it down, using steel needles which were older
than the machine, (I was 8), of course before too long the music was pretty
well inaudible.

Yes, steel needles on 45s!
My neighborhood chum had a kiddie machine (replete with colorful clowns or
something on the case) with an acoustic head made of plastic which used
old-fashioned straight shank steel needles and a built-in spring-loaded 45
adapter on the turntable. His sister was the real owner and she got it for
her birthday in 1958. We used it 1958-1963 or so. I honestly don't
remember if the motor played 78s or not!
