Yes, steel needles on 45s!
My neighborhood chum had a kiddie machine (replete with colorful clowns or
something on the case) with an acoustic head made of plastic which used
old-fashioned straight shank steel needles and a built-in spring-loaded 45
adapter on the turntable.  His sister was the real owner and she got it for
her birthday in 1958.  We used it 1958-1963 or so.  I honestly don't
remember if the motor played 78s or not!
