There are a couple of points about this song, one obvious and one curious.

Black musicians have generally avoided recording it, except as an 
instrumental, because of the sentiment expressed in the lyric (one has 
to assume that the subject is a white female to be sung by a presumably 
white male). Given this fact, it is odd that the vocalists on most of 
the recorded versions I have traced are by women.
